Some clients are wary of surveyors recommended by the broker. Certainly you should not rely purely on the broker's recommendation but research the surveyor's abilities and experience and check around the market to see if others recommend him also.

Ask for sample reports to see the quality of work and also ask about the extent of service provided. Not all surveys and reports are the same. Do not simply compare on price.

Surveying is not only about finding defects and reporting condition but also interpreting them, stating how serious they are, discussing them in context and proposing solutions. Most of all presenting all the information in an easy to understand format. Only training, experience and dedication to the task can provide this.

This is what the bona fide brokers are interested in, not a surveyor who misunderstands the defect and kills the sale unnecessarily. The clients are interested in that too. The boat actually might be a bargain or it might not and hopefully the surveyor has the experience to realise that and spent the time to discover the defect.
The boat might be not be a good deal at the price and a good surveyor will be able to mediate proposing repair solutions at buyers expense or appropriate price reductions so that the buyer is happy and the boat is sold.
In the end a good survey will take 1 day or more not several hours. A good report will additionally take 1 or more days to make.
If everything is going to happen in a few hours and the report will be ready the same day then its not going to be a very thorough inspection and neither will the report be very good.
Buyers considering the boat from abroad will appreciate a full photo report of the survey and this takes additional time to prepare.
Of course a very good inspection and report is not going to be the cheapest but it will offer the most value and provide the information required that may save you from buying a boat with major defects that will be very difficult to sell or may require uneconomic repairs to get it in a good condition to sell.
