_Yacht Surveyor

Motor Boat Surveys

Offering you quality surveying of motor boats in all sizes from small to superyachts. GRP, Wood, Steel, Aluminium. 70s technology or latest fully loaded high tech systems.

  Survey Scheduling

It is possible to do an in water or out of water inspection of a boat in one day. This gives a reasonable idea whether to proceed further with the sale or reject it entirely.

However for a full opinion suitable for pre-purchase we need to also make an out of water survey and some sea trials. So 2 days are the minimum necessary to complete the surveys. Then a third optional visit can be made for checking that repairs requested were carried out properly. For significant repairs, attendance periodically during the repairs is also possible.

Sea Trials are very important because machinery could look externally satisfactory but in the end it is not working. It is often on sea trials where additional important defects are revealed.

  Ready for Cruising

Should you require the boat to be prepared at the yard ready for cruising then it is essential the sea trials are done on the way to the yard. Indeed I would also like to make an in water survey before going to the yard too. Then the works can be specified properly. Otherwise a sea trial after the yard may reveal defects which cannot be attended to when the boat is in the water.

It is ideal to close with the boat at the yard because you can make the repairs or upgrading you want or at the least to antifoul and change anodes. Hauling/Launching of large motor boats is expensive and if you have to haul again after the sale is concluded that is an unnecessary expense.

  Sea Trials

For the large boats sea trials are usually between the haul out yard and the home berth of the yacht. This gives say around 1 hour of sea trials which is generally sufficient to see the engines in operation and brought up to full rpm and check all the instruments. Then at the berth we can continue checking the other machinery and hotel systems.

Otherwise the sea trials would be around the bay type.

If longer sea trials are requested this would be an additional service and would have to be specially agreed with the owner because of the additional fuel consumption and longer crewing.

  Haul Outs

There are various locations around Greece for haul out for bottom survey. This can be survey lift for recent GRP boats where the yacht is suspended for 1 hour for survey but this is not possible for aluminium, steel, wood boats because more time is needed for inspection.

It is preferable for the yacht to be properly hauled, this gives the best circumstances for inspection and in the case of GRP yachts to be out of the water for a week to dry to representative moisture levels. But we can work around the survey limitations. For wooden yachts it is better if the antifoul is removed for the best inspection.

Generally the haul out is organised by sellers and paid for by buyers. If necessary we can arrange haul out or survey lift.

  Split Surveys

Split Surveys are possible. So we would make an in-water or out of water inspection with the boat as-is and issue a report. Then the prospective buyer can consider the report and decide whether to proceed further with the purchase or reject it. If the boat is acceptable then we can proceed with another inspection and sea trials and thereafter update the report.

  Preliminary Inspections

Preliminary Inspections are offered for the purposes of eliminating boats from a selection. These consist of 1 hour inspections on the basis of finding as many defects as possible in that time period. These are not full surveys, there is not enough time to find all the defects which would be revealed with the methodical and slow approach of a full survey and indeed functional testing at sea trial may reveal more defects. So really they are intended to assist the buyer to eliminate boats from a selection and choose the boat(s) which should have a full survey.

Preliminary Inspections and Buyers visit to the boats are generally possible without signing MOA and paying a deposit. Full surveys sometimes require that.

  Accompanied Viewings

Accompanied viewings are when the surveyor goes with the buyer for a visit to the boat. Again these are not full surveys but may be useful to the buyer. Buyers are also welcome to attend the full survey but a running commentary cannot be given and it would be suggested to have a meeting after the survey to summarise.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurements of Steel or Aluminium Motor Yachts

To make a good ultrasonic survey takes much time. To get a good opinion of the hull I would propose (basic survey pre-purchase type) to divide the underwater hull into 1m x 1m squares and do minimum 9 measurements per square and more in an area where excessive diminution found. For owners consultancy (separate ultrasonic job) I am working to 50cm x 50cm with minimum 9 per square. The ultrasonic work generally takes full day or two for a 20m. I would examine the underwater plating only. Topsides are usually faired and if areas of underwater plating are faired I cannot take measurements there.

The pre-purchase survey will also include bilge access where possible to determine the condition of the inside surface of the plating and therefore the extent of the ultrasonics on the hull external surfaces. Usually the external surfaces are very good and it is the interior surfaces especially where inaccessible where coatings could not be maintained and where there is diminution.

These surveys are performed with the latest cygnus multiple echo equipment for through coating measurement. Hull surfaces need to be clean of marine growth and high pressure washed before the measurements. Couplant used is water based and easy to remove with water.
